Dear Rena,
I’ve not seen you in much yet, but everything I have seen you’ve been phenomenal in. I have to pass on a special thank you for ‘Once Were Warriors’. I saw this film in college a few years ago as part of my film course, and its one of those movies that pick you up by the scruff of the neck, throw you around the room and knock you down to the floor in shock at just how incredible it is. Its extremely difficult to watch because I have a violent background {though nowhere near as brutal as that portrayed in the film}, but ultimately rewarding. So I just wanted to say thanks for a brilliant performance in a brilliant film… and for actually making me want to watch a Crow sequel! 😀
Take care of yourself – hope to see you in something massive soon. 🙂
Rena,
David Pearl from San Francisco (white tank top, shorts, glasses, wavy hair-very cute 🙂 We met at a table of my friends (Wendy from Australia and Kari from Santa Rosa) at the LA Film Festival on Sunday the 19th in the Target/Red Room.
I’m moving to LA on July 2nd.
Let’s stay in touch and support eachother in our careers.
Cheers !
Hi Rena, been a fan for years. Used to live in West Harbour ( Auckland), and had a lot of mates in South Auckland. Own a couple of businesses in Chicago now ( mortgage co and ladies workout studio) Give us a call if you are in town, my shout. Morton’s or better!
Rena;
Hello!! Hope that you are doing well… I just wanted to contact you and tell you that I really enjoyed your performance as BETH HEKE in “Once Were Warriors” and “What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted?” I watched both last night. One on DVD rental and the other on Aboriginal People’s Television Network here in Canada. I really relate to Beth a lot. I’ve been in a couple of abusive relationships and am still in abusive relationship #2… There was only one incident where it became physical but, abuse as you know from your portrayal of Beth comes in many forms. I live by myself with my three daughters and their father lives elsewhere. It’s how I want it for now anyway… Beth has opened my eyes in many ways… I laughed and cried along with her, but like Beth I had to realize that love sometimes isn’t enough especially when there are children involved. Thank you so much you’ve helped me more than you’ll ever know… As an adult woman I relate to Beth but as a teenage girl years ago I relate to Grace. My Mother allowed people to drink and party in our home and my own Uncle molested me. I was suicidal but reached out for help and survived that painful chapter of my life… but watching the movie brought back the pain, but in a good way. It reminds me to never allow those things to happen to my children. I’ve been drug and alcohol free since 1994. I am a Shuswap Native from the Alkali Lake Reservation in British Columbia Canada.I hope that this email isn’t too long. But, I really wanted to tell you that I admire your acting and strength. Take care.

It was great to meet you at SW Celebration III. Here is a link to some of the photos you had taken with me as Chewbacca – http://tinyurl.com/dgwlm
I really appreciate you taking the time to have your picture taken with me. I look forward to seeing you at another convention in the future – maybe Celebration IV!

kia ora Rena! ka pai you have this pukapuka manuhiri – my name is Martha (nickname Martita) and I live in Chicago…….I am a licensed solicitor and work traveling throughout the US as a fraud investigator for Allstate. I also have a tino pai rawa side business (see my website above) so I had the chance to spend two choice weeks in Aotearoa back in February and March of this year and I loved it to death – I am half Mexican and very proud of my indegenous roots so I had a lot to korero w/ my Maori bros and sissies about….nonetheless, even though I’m back home now, I am still continuing to practice taku reo online and w/ some kiwi ex-pat buddies who live here in the US (u might know taku hoa Dane Ngahuka?? he lives in Nevada and he and his mates are very active bringing maoritanga to the desert – I’m gonna see it them weekend in fact). Also, I’m writing a book/screenplay – semi-autobiographical mostly set in Chicago, but I’ve recently added a few Maori characters and hope maybe you might be able to star in it…..(hey – as you’re so busy I know it’s a long shot – plus I gotta finish it first – hehehe)
Anyway – please feel free to check out my website – would love to hear from you if you have time – I do get to LA every now and then for mahi so I’d love to practice my reo w/ you sometime!
Arohanui,
Martita
