Guestbook Entry

  1. Tena koe e te tuahine Rena,
Congrats & Lovely to see you as Cover Story and on the cover of Mana Magazine, Issue 90 and to read your interview wtih Katherine Findlay. Lovely to catch-up with you in the tabloids. Also very aware of your current work on The Pohutukawa Tree down in Tamaki Makaurau there. All the very best and will see you over the festive season perhaps, at the Klondike Moerewa. Arohanui, na Meretini x

  2. Rena,
On Saturday the 19th of September 2009 I attended The Pohutukawa Tree at the Maidment Theatre at Auckland University. I am fairly new to the theatre going experience and have attended all of ATC’s productions this year. I have to say your performance in this play moved me to the point of a blubbering mess (luckily I waited till I got to my car before breaking down). My girlfriend and I had a great discussion about the how’s and whys it affected me so much and why I empathised with your character “Aroha”. I guess it just came down to my lack of knowledge of New Zealand history (although me being born and raised here), and my slight ignorance of Maori culture/history. I felt for “Aroha” and fully understood her motivation, right up to the end. Not only was it your performance, but the play as a whole opened my eyes a little more to New Zealand’s somewhat intrepid history. I just want to say thank you for the amazing experience, and thank you for moving me in such a way. Good luck with your future endeavours, and thank you once again.

  3. I have bought Flow Design, a clothing business from Wellington. I heard that you wore a Flow Design one-shouldered dress to the Oscars. Can you tell me what year it was and better still, any photo’s?

Best wishes and good luck with everything you are doing. Proud Kiwi!

  5. Miss Owen,
You are a wonderful wonderful, actress, a strong intelligent native woman, and a role model for native women all over!! even here in the Native Sioux communities of North Dakota we have all the same problems as were protrayed in the film “Once were warriors” We have seen so many of our people fight addictions to alcohol, drugs, huffing, abuse, It is about time an actress shows there is more out there than the Jennifer Aniston types, who could never comprhend a serious role as you so perfectly do.. Many thanks Miss Owen

  6. Kia ora Rena,
Firstly I want to congratulate you on your amazing career which must give you a wonderful sense of pride. Obviously it’s an awesome journey you’re on.
I believe your role as Beth in ‘Once Were Warriors’ is one of your most powerful roles. What is amazing is there are still many families in New Zealand and other counties (mostly ethnic groups)living just as Beth and her children. Like Beth it takes a major event for women to have the courage to leave and what is even more unbelievable is there are some woman and children living in even worse situations. A major issue is seeing the high levels of violence our youth of today are using against others, family – girlfriends, wives, mothers, children, grandmothers, friends, neigbours and strangers alike. Some are children as young as 11 and 12yrs dishing out this violence. I know your role as Beth has made a huge impact. I believe ‘Once Were Warriors’ should be watched by all youngsters who show violent tendencies or get enjoyment from violence. Maybe it will be a deterrent to them.
I can’t wait to see you as ‘Aroha’.

  7. Have yo thought of doing things like ringtones, voicemails, and such? Your voice on Star Wars III was just incredible. Very soft, smoothing, and so easy to listen to.

  8. Dear Rena, just watched ‘Once Were Warriors’ for the ‘fourth’ time. Incredible acting from all involed, but especially yourself and Mr. Morrison. I’m from England but live in Canada, and, knowing a great deal about the North American Aboriginal Peoples (the First Nations) I could’nt help comparing so many things within the film. I believe that such a film has been ‘long overdue’ and ‘Thank You’ for being part of a ‘learning experience’ which I feel has opened many eyes and minds. Once again, ‘Thank You’.
